Big
Flats, New York
holds as its motto: “Small town spirit, soaring into
the future”! Situated in the delightful Finger
Lakes Region in New
York State's Southern
Tier, Big Flats is a small town within the dynamic
Elmira
Metropolitan Area. It is located on the western
border of lovely Chemung
County, known as the ‘Soaring Capital of the
World’. Harris Hill, in the nearby town of Horseheads,
is one of the premier sites for sailplanes and gliders
to take off and explore the gently rolling terrain and
sparkling lakes of New
York.
Big Flats is aptly named for the lush, fertile terrain
the town occupies along the Chemung
River. Covering over 46 square miles of
land, the town has 72 miles of road and an abundance
of streams connecting to the river. Big Flats is
the archeological site of one of the oldest Indian
settlements found in New York State, Runonvea
Village, from the early Algonquin Indian age.
Early white settlers grew a prosperous tobacco crop,
and dairy herds were numerous in the region.
Today the town is the site of the Elmira-Corning
Regional Airport, and Interstate 86 connects Big
Flats with both Elmira and the City of Corning.
As both cities grow and expand outward, businesses are
looking toward Big Flats as a prime relocation spot.
Found within the Elmira
Empire Zone, a plethora of state and local tax incentives
are in place, ready to welcome incoming firms.
The Southern Tier
Economic Growth (STEG) works hand in hand with
Chemung County, providing discounts on electricity,
telecommunications and other services. Just a
few of the major corporations already relocated to Big
Flats are Corning
Incorporated, Wal-Mart
and Sam's
Club, Lowes
Building Supply and Orthstar
Software. A 480-acre Airport
Corporate Park and Corporate
Park South, across from the Elmira Airport and
directly off the Interstate, are two prime locales for
business. Big Flats has a great diversity of new
firms, from high technology to manufacturing, research
development and retail. The population of over
7,000 (Census 2000 data) has a wide range of employers
from which to choose.
Education is vital to Big Flats residents. Part
of the Horseheads
School District, Big Flats students receive one of
the best public school curriculums in the northeast,
with an emphasis on technology to prepare the
children for our quickly changing world. The
Elmira Metropolitan Area schools consistently receive
national recognition for their high standards.
For higher learning, The
Elmira Business Institute, Elmira
College and Corning
Community College, a New York State University,
are only miles away. 67% of residents 25 and
older have obtained a college degree.
Fifteen community parks
grace the small town of Big Flats. Athletics and
youth programs are a large part of this close-knit
area. Seniors are revered also, with a
number of programs
specifically for them. Fishing is a time-honored
tradition here, and boating on the Chemung River is a
year-round activity.
Big Flats, New York offers residents and businesses
the quiet and safety of small town living, while the
proximity to Elmira and Corning assure their
‘soaring into the future’.
