Hornell,
New York,
known as ‘The Maple City’, is a refreshing blend
of rural serenity and a robust business community. Located in the beautiful Finger
Lakes Region of southwestern New
York State, Hornell is ideally situated to offer
the finest in modern living as well as the charm of a
small-town atmosphere.
Hornell is part of rapidly growing Steuben
County. Situated directly off Interstate 86,
Hornell lies within 60 miles of Rochester,
93 miles from Buffalo
and 40 miles from Corning.
The city is within one day’s trucking time of more
than half of Canada’s and the United States’
industrial markets. The Hornell
Municipal Airport is the largest facility of its
kind in Steuben County.
Hornell, NY began its life as a major business
center with the boom of the Erie
Railroad in the late 1800’s. The decline
of the railroad industry in the late 1900’s halted
the city’s growth, but in the 21st
century, major businesses and firms are looking to
Steuben County as a prime relocation area.
Today, the leading employers in Hornell are Alstom,
a 100-year old European rail company that adopted this
rail city as its U.S. base, the construction company A.
L. Blades and Sons, and Steuben
Tile. The City of Hornell Industrial
Development Agency (CHIDA) owns three industrial parks
totaling 210 acres, and has many programs in place
offering new firms attractive incentives
for relocating to this thriving community.
The Census 2000 recorded Hornell’s population at
9,019. Residents have access to top-notch
education through Alfred
University, the New
York College of Technology, and the Steuben
Allegany Board of Cooperative Education Services (Boces).
Hornell
is a physically striking city. It stands
surrounded by the lush rolling hills and dense
woodlands of the mostly rural Steuben County.
Hornell has kept its ancient maple trees and 1800’s
Victorian homes, creating a rustic and charming
down-home atmosphere. Priding themselves as the
‘City of All Seasons’, Hornell residents enjoy
their community throughout the year. Nestled
among the grassy hills of the Canisteo
Valley, five city parks invite residents to enjoy
the scenic views throughout the spring and summer.
Autumn months are the time to take walking tours or
canoe trips along the Canisteo
River, admiring the towering maples in their full
glory. Nearby New York state parks offer
excellent skiing, tubing and snowboarding through the
winter months.
Hornell, New York is a thriving, growing city with glowing prospects for
its economic future. As the economy of Steuben
County expands and diversifies, Hornell is quickly
becoming a major commercial center for the region.
At the same time, Hornell remains a close-knit
community that values its charm, its history and its
small-town ambience.
