Steuben
County, New York
is a marvelously diverse region found in the
enchanting Finger
Lakes Area. Steuben County’s 1400 square
miles of rolling hills and deep valleys encompass some
of the richest soil and most spectacular scenery in New
York State. A mostly rural district, Steuben
County contains three main population centers, along
with 47 small towns and quaint hamlets. The town of Bath
serves as the county seat. The cities of Corning
and Hornell
are two bustling communities full of modern amenities
and a thriving economic climate. In contrast,
the remainder of Steuben County is pristine wilderness
and quiet lakeshores, lush vineyards and tiny dairy
farms.
Located in New
York's Southern
Tier region,
Steuben County’s population was reported at over
98,000 by the 2000 Census. In the southwestern portion
of the state, the county is just north of the Pennsylvania border. The northern edge of the Steuben County contains
miles of shoreline along Keuka
Lake, said to be one of the most splendid of the
Finger Lakes. It is the only lake in the world
to flow both north and south. The Keuka
Lake Wine Trail runs through this region, offering
connoisseurs a taste of the very best.
The terrain of Steuben County, NY was formed by the
movement of ice age glaciers, leaving behind
picturesque hills and gorges, along with fertile, rich
soil. Field crops, fruits and vegetables thrive
here, and roadside stands dot the quiet country roads.
The Steuben County Agricultural Fair is held each year
in Bath, the oldest continuous Fair in the nation.
Bath is a town of farmers and craftsmen, such as such as
stone workers and
archery bow
makers.
The city of Corning is an artist's
haven as well, with a long-held reputation as a center
for glass art and glass making. One
of the largest collections of glass in the world is
found in the Corning
Museum of Glass. Modern manufacturing also
thrives in Corning, with two Fortune
500 Companies found here, Corning,
Incorporated and the Dresser
Rand Company.
New industries are discovering wonderful Steuben County.
Part of a tri-county region which includes Schuyler
and Chemung
Counties, the area is targeted as a New
York State Empire Zone. Numerous tax and
utilities incentives are offered, luring in fresh
businesses to the sector. The town of Erwin
is now home to the new Photonics Devices Technology
plant, and other high-tech industries are on their
way. The excellent transportation network
surrounding the city of Hornell is leading to a
business growth spurt, as it becomes the hub for
shopping and commerce. Careful town and county
planners insure that as the business sector grows,
none of the natural beauty of Steuben County shall be
lost.
Tourists have long known of the treasures of Steuben County.
Fisherman from around the nation visits its many
lakes. Landlocked salmon, trout and superb bass
fishing abound in the many glistening streams and
waterways. Also a hunting
mecca, Steuben County has the
highest deer population per square mile of any New
York county, and ranks in the top 10% for turkey
population. Autumn leaves dress the area in a
glorious array of color, and residents and visitors
alike take to the quiet country lanes to view the
splendor.
A place of modern growth and industry, along with
peaceful, quiet country values, Steuben County, New
York has something for everyone.
