Long Boiler Locomotive: A type of locomotive patented by Stephenson in 1842 which was provided with a boiler longer than the usual 9 feet of the day. The objective was to reduce the heat reaching the smokebox in an attempt to reduce the rapid destruction of smokeboxes and chimneys which had occurred up to that time. By increasing the boiler length to 13 feet or more, the temperature was reduced by over 30% and the life of smokeboxes was considerably extended.
