Watkins
Glen, New
York is located on the southern shores of Seneca Lake, in the heart of the
Finger Lakes region. Watkins Glen, named for Dr.
Samuel Watkins, is the county seat of Schuyler
County.
According to the Census 2000 Report, this Upstate NY community reported a population of
2,149
residents.
Watkins
Glen is a charming area graced with stunning
natural beauty. Cliffs, gorges, waterfalls, salt
works and unusual rock formations are just a few
of the breathtaking features that attract visitors
every year. The
Watkins Glen State Park is
home to one of the Finger Lakes' most famous
gorges. Its trough, formed because
of Ice Age glaciers, is one and a half miles long and created nineteen
waterfalls and three hundred foot sandstone and shale
cliffs.
Most
well known for its role in auto racing, Watkins
Glen proudly proclaims its title as 'The Home of
American Road-Racing'. It is the home of the world
famous Watkins
Glen International
racetrack. "The Glen" hosts one of the few NASCAR
races not conducted on an oval circuit. Watkins Glen
is also home to the Watkins
Glen Grand Prix,
which is an annual auto road race. Before there
was a racetrack, this historical race took place
on the public streets in and around the town. The Grand
Prix of 1948 was the first post-World War II
road race and was responsible for reviving road racing
in America. The International
Motor Racing Research Center is
now here to preserve the history and heritage of
motor racing.
Seneca Lake is nestled in the heart of this wine country
and is known as one of America's finest wine
districts. The Seneca
Lake Wine Trail
extends all the way around beautiful Seneca Lake and highlights
twenty-six of the region's top vineyards. When the racecars are silent, the Watkins Glen
International attracts visitors by hosting
the annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival.
Seneca Lake also offers kayaking, sailing, swimming
and year round fishing.
Watkins
Glen has plenty of attractions to entice tourists, but
is also strong in other economic areas such as
agriculture and manufacturing. Two of the
companies that currently call Watkins Glen home are Cargill
Salt and US Salt. Salt mines are located in the
Apalachian Basin
, which are the remains of a sea that once covered the
region. The local mines yield evaporated salt, which
is the purest form of all salts. BMS Manufacturing Company is a company that manufactures precision
machined and fabricated metal components. The
area's central location, between Syracuse,
Rochester, Corning
and Binghamton,
makes Watkins Glen an ideal place for almost
any type of business to thrive.
The Schuyler County area offers a myriad of
choices for higher learning. SUNY Binghamton,
Ithaca
College
and Cornell
University in
Ithaca, are three of the colleges found within a
short drive of the region. Watkins
Glen School District provides
a community based education for K-12th grade students
with an emphasis on individualized learning.
Watkins Glen is an enchanting
NY
village with endless opportunities for visitors and
residents alike.
